Indigenous Round

The Lockleys Football Club is committed to playing a role in reconciliation, and in 2022 we hosted our inaugural Indigenous Rounds for our Senior and U17.5 teams.

Be Brave & Speak Up

Reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility

Our commitment extends beyond the Indigenous Rounds schedule. As a Club, our committee, players and members identify this inaugural round as the beginning of an active journey of learning, connection and reconciliation with our First Nations People.

Like the beginning of many journeys of change, we don’t have all the answers, we may even stumble, and we don’t exactly know what the end of that journey will look like. Nonetheless, taking those first steps is important to us.

We can’t do this alone, and we certainly can’t go down the road of inclusivity and reconciliation without the leadership and guidance of First Nations People.

Our Club proudly wore Indigenous guernseys beautifully designed by Shane and Portia Bond. The guernsey “represents the Yorke Peninsula (Narrungga) land with water around it and our fish, the butterfish. The footprints on the back represent Lockleys footy club and us walking together” – Shane Bond.

Uncle Moogy Sumner AM performed a Welcome to Country at each of our Indigenous games.

What is a Welcome to Country, why is it important, and who may conduct it?

A Welcome to Country is a protocol where Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners welcome others to the land of their ancestors. It is a great honour for Lockleys to welcome Uncle Moogy to our Club and link us to his ancestors.

Uncle Moogy is a proud and respected Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri. He, therefore, has permission to do a Welcome to Country within metropolitan Adelaide, Adelaide plains (Kaurna), Murray Bridge, Victor Harbour and the South Australian South East coastline (Ngarrindjeri).

Whilst in Kaurna country (Metropolitan Adelaide and Adelaide Plains), an Aboriginal person from other Aboriginal countries or a Non-Aboriginal person may do an Acknowledgement of Country.

Below is a list of past and current Aboriginal Lockleys players and members and a link to Australia’s map highlighting the different countries and language groups.

*We understand that there may be players/members that we have missed from this list. Please message the club and we will update accordingly.

Come on this journey with us.

Fantastic to hear how your club is working towards greater understanding and respect. Your commitment at the grass roots level to Reconciliation is a great role model for all. Stoked with your efforts. Deadly jumpers too! The Moonta FC Senior Committee have ‘Reconciliation’ included in their 2022-25 Action Plan. Our Indigenous players have been involved with designing our jumpers for the YPFL Indigenous Round on July 30. Great to see Narungga country feature on your jumpers. Red and blue forever! Well done Lockleys FC.
